The Skagway Arts Council is sponsoring its first “Artist in Residence” Program from April 14 through April 27, 2014. Mr. Bor Ceh, a multimedia artist from Slovenia, was referred to the arts council by local high school teacher/coach Kent Fielding who will be coordinating the program. Bor will arrive in Skagway on Friday, April 11 and on Monday morning, April 14 he will be introduced to students at an assembly presentation of his work and cultural background. Later that day he will begin working with students daily for two weeks on film projects, visual arts and poetry.
The public is invited to meet Mr. Ceh on Saturday, April 19 at 7 p.m. at the Skagway Public Library, where he will present a showing of his work and films followed by a discussion period. Bor will also conduct a bicyclic-building workshop open to the public on Saturday, April 26 (location TBD); and his visit will culminate with BORFEST: A showing of student projects developed during his visit with poetry readings by Bor, Forest Kvasnikoff, Shelby Surdyk, and Kent Fielding on Sunday, April 27 at the Skagway School MPR at 6 p.m.
Bor Ceh earned his diploma from the School of Visual Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He has had exhibitions in Slovenia, China and Italy and has taught at youth institutes around the world (Italy, Turkey, Latvia) for groups such as IDEA (International Debate Education Association). Currently, he has been working on a project called RETRO RATS in which he is designing and building 19th century bicycles. Make a note to attend one or more of these events and take advantage of this rare cultural opportunity occurring in your own hometown.
