The Outdoor Arts Facility was named the Dedman Stage after Barbara Dedman Kalen on May 7.

The original proposed name was Kalen Amphitheater, but Kalen’s daughter, Betsy Albecker, said her mother wanted to be remembered as Dedman Kalen. Not wanting to be too wordy, the assembly decided on Dedman. And as the facility is not an amphitheater, it was replaced with stage.

President of the Skagway Arts Council Dottie Demark said when you dedicate something for a person, you do it because they have done something to promote what the building represents.

“I can’t think of anyone in this town who has done more for culture and music than Barb,” Demark said.
