After reviewing bids for 14-passenger activity buses, the Skagway School Board decided to purchase two eight-passenger Ford Expeditions instead.

School Board member Stuart Brown said he didn’t like the buses, adding that they aren’t much different from what the school currently has and may not be safe in the winter.

Through the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities light duty vehicle contract, the school will be able to purchase the 2016 SUVs for $35,000 each, almost half of what the vehicles usually cost.

School Board President John Hischer said purchasing the two vehicles will give the school more flexibility to take more students in a safer way.
