Borough Assembly members passed the first reading of an ordinance changing language regarding the lease of public lands on Sept. 3.
The code stated that leases between the municipality and the state were exempt from a vote of the people.
The ordinance read on Sept. 3 will remove the exemption.
Assemblyman Steve Burnham Jr. said the former code did not allow the municipality the proper negotiating power needed to negotiate something the voters would accept.
“I think we need to change it back,” he said.
Now, any lease more than $5 million will have to go to the public for a vote.
