A trip to the Marshall Islands, focusing on climate change, was approved by School Board members on Sept. 29.

Proposed by Kent Fielding, students will travel to the low-lying islands in the spring of 2017 and will have to raise funds for the trip themselves.

Board member Cara Cosgrove stressed the importance of fundraising, saying the board should not be responsible to cover funds if the students don’t raise enough.

“It’s less about the financial burden on the school than it is about teaching… about creating a budget and meeting those goals and the deadline,” she said.

Board member Mary Tidlow added that students should have a plan B prepared in case they don’t raise enough money.

“I understand making climate change important, but you don’t necessarily have to go to the Marshall Islands to do that,” she added.
