With housing shortages a constant problem in Skagway, school board members discussed the possibility of applying for the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation’s Housing Grant Program for teachers, health professionals and public safety housing.

Applications for the grant are due in June, and projects must be ready to break ground. But due to legislative cuts, the program isn’t certain what kind of funding they will even be able to give.

As the municipality doesn’t have any housing projects in the works, they can’t qualify for the grant. But school board members still spoke to the problem’s importance and the want to improve the situation.

School board  members Cara Cosgrove and Darren Belisle said they would gladly serve on a committee dedicated to the problem and asked assemblyman Tim Cochran to approach the assembly with the idea.
