With the passing of a new resolution, municipal employees can now donate the cash equivalent of their sick leave to coworkers in need.

An employee can donate a maximum of 20 days or 50 percent accrued vacation or sick leave, so long as the donation does not reduce the employee’s balance to less than 10 days. The employee accepting the donation must have exhausted all of his or her own leave and can only use the donated time for medical reasons or for a death.

“It’s definitely frustrating when you have a coworker who could use your sick time, and you’re not accruing anymore because you’re maxed out,” Assemblyman Steve Burnham Jr. said.

The resolution passed unanimously.
