The SHS volleyball team ended its season at regionals in Klawock Dec. 2-3 by dropping two matches. They lost to top seed Petersburg (runner-up at both the regional and state tournament) in the opening round, and then fell to rival Haines.
At the close of the tournament, the team was awarded the regional Sportsmanship Award.
“To a coach, or at least to this one, this award means more than a title,” said coach Aarong Scmidt. “It recognizes that even though we lost all of our division contests, we raised the level of play. We continue to forge strong connections with other teams, and our prospects for the future are bright. I see us as the ‘Cool Hand Luke’ of Southeast volleyball…though that is a decidedly masculine analogy. Perhaps it’s better said with help from Maya Angelou:
‘You may trod us in the very dirt
But still, like dust, we’ll rise.’ “
Meanwhile, all five seniors won all-academic honors: Hailey Jensen, Sienna Johnson, Delaney Rau, Kiara Selmer, and team manager McKenna Rau. – JB
