Skagway High School’s DDF team again placed all five of its students in finals at a meet.
In Ketchikan Dec. 9-10, juniors Kara Whitehead and Micah Cook finished first and second respectively in Expository Speaking for the second straight meet. Junior Steaven McKnight finished in third place in Mime.
Senior team member Dainean Teeluk also took fifth in Dramatic Interpretation of Literature, and combined with Whitehead for a new Duet Acting piece that finished fourth. Finally, the trio of Cook, McKnight and Danny Brady took fifth in Readers Theatre.
While coach Jonathan Baldwin has been away with his wife having a baby, former coach Kent Fiedling has stepped in to lead the team’s practices and took them to the Ketchikan meet.
“I’ve been impressed with the team’s work ethic,” Fielding said.  “Losing Dom Rotier and Al Weber (to graduation), I wasn’t sure who would step up, but Danny, Steaven and Micah have put together an outstanding Readers Theater that could make a run during the State Tournament; Kara and Micah have been impressive in expository speaking finishing first and second again; and Dainean has made finals twice with her D.I.  Overall, it’s been a productive and exciting year.”
Over the holiday break former SHS state DDF champion Shelby Surdyk is returning and will work with the team, and Baldwin returns in January.  The team’s next outing is the big Southeast meet January 13-14 in Juneau, which is a prep for the State Tournament in February. – JB
