The varsity basketball season is in full swing after a flurry of home games to start off the month.

After falling to region-leading Klawock, both Panther boys and girls teams advanced past Yukon teams to the finals of the Don Hather Tourney – only to face  Klawock again. But they played better against the Chieftains and then followed up the tourney with sweeps of Thorne Bay. Both teams were .500 in league play before heading out on a key road trip to Kake and Angoon this week.

Boys coach Scott Lesh likes his team’s progress so far and is expecting a good series of games this week if everyone is healthy.

“Overall they’re coming together as a team,” Lesh said. “They are really playing hard. There are spurts of really good things I see and then times where we’re not doing as well. And I think a lot of that is not having everyone at practice, when you have some kids that are sick and some that are traveling.”

The boys return to play their final home games against Hydaburg Feb. 6-7.

Girls coach Paul Myers is happy to see his team ramp up the scoring.

“They are definitely putting up shots like they need to, working as a team, and not fighting,” Myers said. “So it’s been a really good start.”

His goals for the road trip: “Keep their heads in the game, hope everybody can get better, and we can win these next series.”

The girls will have a bit of a break until both teams hit the road to Hoonah Feb. 15-16, and then will play their final home series against Yakutat Feb. 17-18. – JB

Highlights for Skagway boys: Beat every Yukon team in tourney. Had low energy in third game against Klawock (box-and-1 affected Ethan Goebel) but rebounded well against Vanier in an overtime thriller. Gavin Goebel hit a 3-pointer from corner to send into OT, then after falling behind, Alex Ackerman put Skagway ahead on a one-hander down low. The team was short Ackerman and McKnight for the championship game, but team played much better game against one of best teams in state.
