At the most recent Skagway School Board meeting on Tuesday, July 18, board members approved the adoption of new guidelines for students to be eligible to participate in interscholastic student body activities.

Along with regulations set forth by the Alaska School Activities Association, students must also meet the new local regulations. A few of the guidelines include that students maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average, have no failing or incomplete grades and are prohibited from using tobacco, alcohol or drugs.

“I think this is pretty inclusive from all walks that came together to come up with this, so I think this is some good work by everybody,” Board Member Darren Belisle said.

Another guideline explains students who receive a failing grade or cannot maintain a 2.0 grade point average will not be allowed to practice or compete in any competitions. They can only return when the requirements have been met again.

There are seven total parts to the new eligibility policy.

“And it’s black and white, which is great,” Board Member Cara Cosgrove said.
