There will be a celebration of life for the late Monica Carlson at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at the Skagway School gym.

Residents are encouraged to come and pay their respects to the Carlson family and remember the former mayor.

There have been a number of people on the municipal level who have been working hard to get this together,” Mayor Andrew Cremata said.

Carlson, who served as mayor for more than a year, was struck by a bus and killed while visiting Washington, D.C., in December. Both Carlson and her mother, Cora Adams, were taken to the hospital, where they died of their injuries.

A Skagway resident of 34 years, Carlson was elected mayor in 2017 as a write-in candidate and was set to serve until October 2019.

“Monica was a pillar of this community and somebody countless people saw every day, ” Cremata said. “This is a time to honor her service to the community and pay our respects to her family.”
