The Skagway school women’s varsity took home the high school’s first track team trophy.

The team, consisting of Jennifer Hansen, Aryanna Lundgren, Tatum Sager and Jessica Whitehead, came in second overall, behind Sitka, for the Region V (Southeast) track and field championships held May 17-18 in Juneau

Hansen won three second-place medals for 100 meters, 200 meters and the high jump. Sager came in third for the 800 meters and triple jump.

The men’s team scored second place in the 4×400-meter relay, with the team of Silas Myers, Wyatt Belisle, Danny Brady and Gavin Goebel. Goebel also took second in the 100 meters, 200 meters and third in the long jump. Brady took third in 800 meters and fifth in the 1600, and Belisle finalled in both.

Skagway has always been at a disadvantage in track competition because team scoring is based on the number of runners who place in the top three, and Skagway has a smaller team than bigger schools, said Kent Fielding, Skagway’s track coach.

“(The women’s team) all had to have high scores in multiple events,” Fielding said of their overall score and team trophy.

The men’s relay team set a new school record, beating a time from nine years ago.

Top-three finishers in every event qualified to compete at the state championships May 24-25 in Palmer, and Skagway is sending six athletes there.
