SFD responds to building fire within historic buildings

The Skagway Fire Department (SFD)  responded to a structure fire on 4th and Broadway, July 27. The fire, found on the back wall of  the Skagway Hardware Store within the framing of the structure, was adjacent to the neighboring business, The Skagway Brewing Company.

Due to the location of the flames, the building’s fire alarms had not yet been activated.  Fire officials evacuated both businesses until the fire could be located and controlled.

The SFD crew cut multiple openings along the floor and wall to access the fire.  

Searches in both buildings found that no signs of fire extension were found in the Brew. Co. building.

The fire was controlled within 30 minutes of the arrival of SFD. Both buildings were ventilated.

SFD Chief Emily Rauscher said the fire appeared to be accidental in nature and believed to have started from an improperly disposed of cigarette.
