President Trump and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau both announced an agreement to close the U.S. – Canada world’s longest border between two countries. At the time of the press release, trucking and essential trade such as fuel and food will not be impacted. Non-essential travel is not permitted.
The Skagway News is attempting to gain specific information on the definition of “non-essential” and how it will impact travel between Southeast Alaska and Southcentral and Interior Alaska. We will update this information as we get more clarification.
A call to the Juneau office of Sen. Murkowski and Sen. Sullivan revealed that Sen. Sullivan has reached out to the department of Homeland Security and the U.S. State Department for clarification on travel through Canada for Alaskans.
