The Incinerator is CLOSED on Saturday, December 5 due to conditions on the Klondike Highway.
Dec. 4, 2020 – Skagway PD/DOT
An additional 3-5 inches of precipitation is expected this weekend. Please report any additional mud slides, flash floods or road damage. Skagway Police Department is advising that citizens continue to stay clear of the Dyea Road and Klondike Highway while the Department of Transportation is working to reopen these roads. Additionally, please stay away from Seven Pastures, Gold Rush Cemetery access road, and all hiking trails as these areas are still threatened by flooding and mud slides. There is no estimated time for reopening.

Please see the attached briefing and information below about the expected snowfall for Upper Lynn Canal on Friday.
Here are the key points:
- What: 2 to 7 inches of snow along the highways with lesser amounts near sea level
- Where: Haines and Klondike Highways
- When: 3 AM Friday to Noon Friday for Haines Hwy. 3 AM to 9 PM for Klondike Hwy
- Impacts: Roads may become slick at times
- Confidence: Low forecast confidence in snow amounts and timing of the changeover to rain near sea level

Dahl Memorial Clinic’s drive-through community COVID-19 testing is cancelled this week. If you require a COVID-19 test please call the clinic at (907) 983-2255 to be scheduled.
Dec. 3, 2020 – 8:10 a.m. Skagway PD
Skagway Police Department is advising citizens to stay clear of the Dyea Road and Klondike Highway while the Department of Transportation is working to reopen these roads. Rain will taper off during the day, but is expected to increase again tonight. Rain rate should be much less than what has fallen over the previous few days.
Saturated ground keeps the risk for debris flows and flooding, especially near steep terrain.

The Municipality of Skagway is working diligently to address issues related to the current extreme weather event.
The Lower Dewey Lake trail is actively sliding. Please stay out of the area
All municipal trails outside of the townsite are closed until further notice.

The Winter Storm Warning for the Klondike Highway near Skagway has been extended through 6 am Thursday, Dec 3, 2020.
Snow levels will lower overnight to around 2000 ft.
An additional 10 inches of snow is expected by early Thursday morning.
The Flash Flood Watch continues for Haines and Skagway areas through Thursday morning.
An additional 1 – 1 1/2 inches of rainfall is expected through early Thursday morning.
The risk for debris flows continues. Although the risk is becoming lower as rain rates are slowing and the freezing levels will be lowering overnight.

The Klondike Highway is to remain closed due to wet flow avalanches above 9 mile. DOT is currently working at clearing Dyea Road to establish an emergency lane.

Road Closures: 7-pastures and Goldrush cemetery
The access roads to 7-pastures and the goldrush cemetery will be closed until further notice

Road Closures and Dyea/Nahku Resident Assistance Due to Extreme Weather Event
The Municipality of Skagway is working diligently to address issues related to the current extreme weather event.
We have closed the road to the Gold Rush Cemetery and the road to Seven Pastures out of caution. Please avoid these areas.

Drive-through COVID testing cancelled today (Municipality of Skagway)
Due to weather and staffing issues the clinic is cancelling today’s drive-through community testing. The Clinic will update the community by the end of the day if it has to postpone further due to the storm.

Here are the key points:
- What: Additional 10 inches of snow expected. Areas of blowing snow.
- Where: Klondike Highway near the border including White Pass
- When: NOW THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 2ND
- Impacts: Travel will be very difficult due to heavy wet snow and reduced visibility due to blowing snow.
- Additional Details: Rising temperatures causing heavy rainfall near sea level. Near freezing temperatures at White Pass will result in very heavy wet snowfall.
Dec. 2, 2020 – 6:56 a.m. – Skagway PD
Dyea Road is closed until further notice at milepost 3.5 due to a mudslide. DOT reports debris up to 8 feet thick on the road. There is currently no estimated time for reopening.

Dyea Townsite Road Closed Due Tree Fall and Heavy Snow Fall (Klondike Gold Rush Nat’e Historic Park release)
The accumulation and weight of snow has caused multiple trees to fall into the Dyea Townsite Road. This has prevented the National Park Service from plowing the Dyea Townsite Road until heavy equipment can be brought in. The National Park Service anticipates opening the road within the next 36 hours; however, sustained inclement weather could cause further delays. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this closure.

DYEA road condition update
The rock slide location is estimated to be 2.5 miles from the Dyea turnoff. Traffic flow is down to one lane. Exercise extreme caution in driving past the affected area.

The Skagway Police department has received a report of a rock slide located near the Longbay area in Dyea. Further details will be provided as they become available.

As of 5:30 am, the Klondike Highway is closed until further notice between Skagway and Fraser Customs due to excessive snow fall and blizzard conditions.
