Secon Construction wrapped up work on the Dyea Road project on the east side of Nahku Bay earlier this month. The project, funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, was one of several repair sites in Southeast Alaska restoring roads and securing mountainsides damaged during December 2020 storms.
The storms, a result of a powerful atmospheric river, inundated Southeast, particularly the Lynn Canal area at the beginning of December 2020. Skagway and Haines received record rainfall and were under flash flood watches for the duration. Two Haines residents were lost in a major landslide on Beach Road.
Upper Lynn Canal areas received 8-10 inches of rain in a 48 hour period with additional flooding exacerbated by melting snow packs.
Gov. Mike Dunleavy made a disaster declaration for the area, allowing for state and federal resources to assist.
The crews filled and widened lanes on several sections of Dyea Road around Nahju Bay. The road is now open for travel without construction limitations.
