Around 200 cruise ship passengers became stranded in Yukon when a massive landslide between KM 106 and 24, (just past the Conrad Campground to Fraser, BC) blocked the Klondike Highway on the morning of June 24.
The slide, approximately 110-150m wide and 20m high, fully covered both lanes of the highway.
Travelers posted photos on social media and one fortunate driver saw the slide begin and backed out of it’s way, filming the slide and water as it pushed down the mountain side in a muddy, rocky and massive land river.
By Friday, the Yukon highway crews, along with additional contracted equipment and operators, created a single traffic lane managed by a pilot car.
As of July 31, there are two lanes open going through the slide area, but there is more land to move.
“We estimate it will take 4,500 dump truck loads to remove all the debris!” a representative of Yukon Highways and Public Work sposted on their official Facebook page.
